The Unitaid's 2019 Grant Implementers' Forum, an international forum held in Geneva, Switzerland on March 19 and 20, brought together several professionals involved in 36 projects financed by Unitaid, including the 'Pre- Exposure Prophylaxis Implementation' (ImPrEP), a research supported by Fiotec. Unitaid is a global health initiative that works with partners to eradicateseveral diseases’ global epidemics.
The focus of the meeting was discussing the scalability role in global innovations on health, that is, the achievement of results aiming to accelerate the expansion of innovations in order to impact the area as much as possible. The event counted with the Unitaid Executive Director, Lelio Marmora, and the General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Valdiléa Veloso, director of the National Institute of Infectology (INI) and coordinator of the ImPrEP project in Brazil, and Cristina Pimenta, international reference in HIV / AIDS, represented Fiocruz at the event.
On the first day, the challenges of Unitaid, lessons learned from 2018 and expectations for 2019 were discussed. At the following day, financial issues were analyzed, such as financial risks management, budget management and financial reporting, as well as financial management and joint venture supervision.
The International Projects analyst, Renan Capossi, having represented Fiotec at the event, gave us further details about the discussion held at the second day of the forum: "Unitaid mentioned some actions they expect from its partners to reduce Unitaid’s participation and increase confidence in signed contracts. The more efficiency, effectiveness, quality and compliance Fiotec presents, the less complements Unitaid will need to finance in order to successfully fulfill the contract; in short the better we are, the less additional guarantees we will be required to give them in order for the project to continue”, explains Renan.
In his opinion, the meeting was important for adding experiences that are going to contribute to the project development: "It was very positive. Being present at the funders annual event, sharing the goals achieved in the previous year, the challenges for the coming year, and exchanging experiences and knowledge with other countries that also receive Unitaid resources is clearly an excellent opportunity to improve the project management and bring Fiotec near to the goals set by the financing institution", he concludes.
