The 71st Annual Meeting of the SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science) took place in Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, between 21st and 27th July. The event was held at the campus of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) and its theme was “Science and Innovation in the Frontiers of Bioeconomy, Biodiversity and Social Development”.
During the seven days of the event, 180 conferences, round tables, meetings and lectures were held, more than 40 cultural attractions were exhibited, 600 posters were made and more than 30,000 people attended.
This year Fiocruz expanded its participation in the meeting by means of a committee created to coordinate the different actions of the Foundation in the Annual Meeting. Wilson Savino, coordinator of Fiocruz’s Regional and National Integration Strategies, explained that the purpose was to achieve a diversified participation, which was why there were Fiocruz researchers in the round tables, workshops and work presentation, participation in SBPC Jovem (the youth branch) and Expot&c.
Fiotec took part of the event for the first time, next to Farmanguinhos and the Carlos Chagas Institute (ICC/Fiocruz), at the Fiocruz booth at the Expot&c, an exhibit of science, technology and innovation (S,T&I) that takes place during the Annual Meetings of the SBPC and brings together hundreds of exhibitors, such as universities, research institutes, promotion agencies, government agencies, private companies and other organizations interested in presenting new technologies, products and services. Renata Correa, of Projects, and Janaina Campos, of the Communication Office, represented Fiotec.
“The event is very large and it is great to see so many people, most of them young, in an event about science and technology, a subject that is so relevant for our country. It was amazing to be able to introduce Fiotec and some of the projects supported by our institution to so many people, and also, of course, to see how so many people are willing to get to know the innovations and courses offered by Fiocruz”, said Janaina.
As the event came to a close, the next Meeting was already being planned. It will take place in Natal from 11th to 18th July, 2020.
