In December construction of the Fiocruz Piauí installations will begin, a Project supported by Fiotec. The new unit will be built on a 13 hectare plot provided by the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) on the east side of the state capital Teresina. There, education and research activities will take place, which will be created as a form of contributing to solution of the principal health problems in the region and improve the quality of life of the local population. The objective is to act effectively in economic and technological development, following the policies of reducing concentration of research activities and providing human research training promoted by the Federal Government.
Despite the fact that they still do not have a fixed location, last Wednesday, August 21st the master’s degree programs to be offered by Fiocruz Piauí held their inaugural class. The event took place in the UFPI Technology Center with the theme ‘From the classroom to public health: the fundamental role of scientific knowledge in the formulation of public health policies”.
Present at the event were the Secretary of Health of Teresina, Noé Fortes; Fiocruz Ceará director Carlile Lavor; local authorities, professional from the foundation, students and professors of the master’s programs and UFPI. On the occasion, UFPI president highlighted the importance of Fiocruz having installations in Piauí. “We want to have quality research and personnel formation with the Fiocruz standard”, he said.
Master’s Degree Courses
The first courses will be in epidemiology of infectious diseases, with emphasis on diseases related to poverty, and on tropical medicine, coordinated by the Sérgio Arouca National School of Public Health (Ensp/Fiocruz) and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), respectively. There are 40 openings for managers and professional in the public health system in research and technological development activities, working in the States of Piauí and Maranhão.
