Fiotec was created with the main goal of providing support to teaching, research, institutional, scientific and technological development, production of consumables and services, information, and management functions implemented by Fiocruz. The institution works strictly according to its Statute, a document drawn up based on Law n° 8.958/1994. regulated by Decree n° 7.423/2010.
In practical terms, Fiotec’s raison d’être is to help Fiocruz continue to be the largest science, technology, and health innovation institution in Latin America, carrying out its mission to strengthen the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Every day, Fiotec’s teams work on the administrative, financial and logistics management of hundreds of projects developed by Fiocruz. Initiatives that range from the training of health workers to innovative methods to control arbovirus diseases and including the absorption of technology to produce vaccines and drugs. These projects are classified according to their goals and work subjects, divided in six “modalities”:
- Teaching
Activities for the formation, qualification and training of personnel, through the learning of new knowledge and professional experiences.
- Extension
Interaction activities with the various sectors of society aimed at the exchange and improvement of knowledge.
- Institutional Development
Considerable improvement in the conditions of the supported institution in the fulfilment of the institute’s mission, consigned in an approved institutional plan.
- Scientific and technological development
Activities aimed at the application of new knowledge related to technology, with visible practical results, which may generate new products, services or processes.
- Research
Activities to generate or verify knowledge, methods and techniques.
- Stimulus to innovation
Activities with a view to introducing novelty or improvement in the productive and social environment that results in new products, services or processes, or that comprises the aggregation of new features or characteristics to an existing product, service or process.
