“We want to encourage the development of new alternative methods and show governments, especially here in Latin America, their importance,” pointed out Otavio Presgrave, president of the Congress.
A historic milestone for ethical science in Brazil. This is how the 13th World Congress on Alternative Methods to the Use of Animals in Science (WC13), held in Rio de Janeiro between August 31 and September 4, 2025, can be defined. For the first time, a country located below the Equator was chosen to host experts from around the world, who debated recent discoveries and advances in alternative methods, with emphasis on the use of artificial intelligence, 3D bioprinting, and organoids.
In an unprecedented move, Fiotec was responsible for supporting the event, directly contributing to a collaborative environment that brought together representatives from universities, research centers, regulatory agencies, and industry giants for five days. WC13 demonstrated that the future of science is collaborative, innovative, and committed to the 3Rs: Reducing, replacing, and refining the use of animals.
"Participating in this congress, of this magnitude, was a challenge for Fiotec." "But as a support foundation, we are constantly evolving, including with the recent achievement of ISO 9001 certification for our direct purchasing process aimed at supported projects and research," commented Cristiane Sendim, executive director of Fiotec, in an interview given during the event.
During the event, Fiotec had a booth where representatives from its International Projects and Communication teams presented to interested parties a little about the work of a support foundation, its main characteristics, and its relevance in the shared management of projects alongside Fiocruz.
