The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has made a technical and financial partnership official, for the next five years, with Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) and Fiotec. The agreement includes a first contract with investment of BRL 15 million, sourced from the BNDES Social Fund, in support of projects aiming at creating local development models.
These projects must be intended to overcoming the poverty situation of the populations benefited. This way, as consequence, the improvement of the life standard is promoted, by generating jobs and income in social and environmentally vulnerable territories, under the perspective of the social determination of health, healthy and sustainable development, joint economy and social technology.
The fund will enable 12 projects by Fiocruz, to be acting in a network, made of the following units: Vice-Presidency of Environment, Healthcare and Health Promotion (VPAAPS), Campus Fiocruz Mata Atlântica (CFMA), Fiocruz Brasília (Direb), Palácio Itaboraí and the Presidency’s Social Cooperation itself. Proposals will be developed in Quilombola and Caiçara community areas, slums, rural settlements and urban forests. Other investment plans may be agreed for new projects in territories with foundation units.
This cooperation agreement is a challenge proposed by Fiocruz and Fiotec to BNDES of providing qualified support for productive inclusion projects based on a joint, healthy and sustainable development model.
Continuous partnership
The cooperation among these three institutions is long standing. In 2014, the bank was the sponsor of Preservo, a project enabling the creation of a modern infrastructure and leading edge technologies for the conservation and public access to the estate of Fiocruz.
BNDES has been funding since 2011 the ecological restoration project for 344 hectares of the Atlantic Rainforest, a place including Fiocruz campus in the region. The focus is revitalizing Pavuninha and Engenho Novo rivers’ micro basins.
Both projects are supported by Fiotec and are only two of numerous partnerships already made with BNDES.
