With support from Fiotec, the project will work to control and prevent diseases in Angola - Fiotec

Updating Angola's entomological map is the central objective of the Redisse IV Project, which had its initial activities between April 10th and 18th in Luanda, the country's capital. Alongside Fiocruz analysts Erica Kastrup and Claudia Turco, Fiotec representatives took part in meetings with the Angolan Ministry of Health, as well as following some of the training process for local health professionals.

The initiative is a key element in the control and prevention of diseases transmitted by insect vectors, such as malaria and dengue fever. The research will identify insect species present in different regions of the country, monitoring their geographical distribution. Based on this information, it is possible to direct more effective strategies for combating and monitoring entomological diseases.

Aline Silva, International Projects Analyst at Fiotec, points out that Angola's climatic and ecological diversity directly contribute to the emergence of a wide variety of disease vectors, making it even more necessary to constantly update the data. "The updated [entomological] map helps with public health decision-making. It is an essential tool for anticipating outbreaks and protecting the population. Investing in this update is investing in health and prevention," she said.

According to the analyst, this first stage of the project is focused on the provinces of Saurimo, Huambo, Lubango and Lobito, where field specialists have been in direct contact with the population since the end of April. The project is technically coordinated by Genimar Rebouças, from Fiocruz Rondônia, and involves researchers from Fiocruz Rondônia, the Leônidas e Maria Deane Institute (ILMD/Fiocruz) and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz).
