On October 27th, one more assistance option was made available to residents of Manguinhos region for the social reintegration of persons with severe and persistent mental illness: Psychosocial Care Center Carlos Augusto Magal. CAPS II will also receive patients from surrounding areas, coming from Tuiuti communities in São Cristóvão, and Arará in Benfica.

It is estimated that the unit will provide daily service to at least 40 new patients a day. The service at CAPS is provided from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Patients can be referred to one of the Psychosocial Care Centers of Rio de Janeiro Local Government by spontaneous demand, by means of a unit of primary or specialized care, after a clinical/psychiatric admission, or by social assistance referral or court order. There, the patient will receive treatment individually or collectively, by means of workshops and therapeutic groups.

'A good partnership'

According to Gisele O'Dwyer, coordinator of Teias - Manguinhos School Project, which has the support of Fiotec. "There was a lot of tension because we ran out of time and some delays did not depend on us to stop happening. We chose to start the selection process of professionals as soon as the work began and we are now finishing the procurement of some items," said Gisele.

Fiotec supported the construction of the entire building, in partnership with the Board of Directors of the Campus (Dirac / Fiocruz), and by hiring professionals who make up the health team of the unit, by means of its support for Teias project.

The coordinator took stock of what has been done so far. "The work was supervised jointly by the management of Ensp [National School of Public Health Sergio Arouca], Dirac, the Presidency and Fiotec. And, in my opinion, everything is working fine. Selected professionals are very good and CAPS Magal facilities too. "

Psychosocial Care Centers

They offer an interdisciplinary approach, consisting of a multidisciplinary team which includes doctors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and other specialists. The service is different for children and youth up to 17 years old, by means of CAPSi, and for people having drinking and drug problems by means of CAPSad.
