More than 140 projects are aimed at helping the most vulnerable populations, like the Quilombos, indigenous peoples, Ribeirinhos, and favela residents from all four Brazil regions. These are initiatives that promote food safety, communication activities, collective and individual hygiene protocols, assistance of risk groups, and mental health.  The project “Fiocruz contra a Covid-19” (Fiocruz Against Covid-19) is responsible for the funding and technical support of the projects selected through the Chamada Pública para Apoio a Ações Emergenciais de Enfrentamento à Covid-19 junto a População Vulneráveis (Public Call for Support and Emergency Actions Related to the Fight Against Covid-19 Together with Vulnerable Populations).

There are three financing ranges: until R$ 10 thousand; until R$ 25 thousand; and until R$ 50 thousand. Altogether, the sum goes up to 4.5 million Brazilian reais deriving from donations made to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation for use in humanitarian actions. Fiotec is responsible for the financial management of the program that is a source of resources for these projects: “Unidos contra a Covid-19” (Together Against Covid-19). Thus, the institution is acting directly in the economic transfer of recourses to non-governmental organizations whose projects were selected. “We have created an entire structure that allows the establishment of a contractual relation with these organizations, including the formalization of documents required for the transfer of resources, the execution and accountability,” explained the External Projects supervisor, Daniele Pereira.

According to her, Fiotec’s Projects team had to put together a specific structuring effort to meet all the demands related to the project. Daniele explains that even the staff from Brasília was mobilized, as well as professionals from other internal areas of Fiotec. They are working in different areas: the structuring and contractual relations formalization projects, transfer of resources, creation of an accountability model, as well as the elaboration of institutional material to help with the project management process.

“We have to do everything in the shortest time possible, all while facing the challenges the current pandemic has brought about, especially regarding the signing of documents. We are building partnerships with organizations of different sizes from all over Brazil, and not all of them have access to the technologies that would make these processes easier. When we run into one of these difficulties, it is our role to come up with alternative solutions to make the completion of the processes possible,” she said.

The program “Unidos contra a Covid-19,” which is also financially managed by Fiotec, invests its resources not only in the project “Fiocruz contra a Covid-19,” but also in other initiatives related to the production of kits for the diagnosis of coronavirus, patient care, research activities to extend the processing capacity of tests, actions to support the communities, and reliable communication.
