In the face of the current pandemic scenario, Fiocruz disclosed, on 03/16, another edition of the Extraordinary Bulletin of Fiocruz’s Covid-19 Observatory. The analysis calls the attention to the indicators that evidence an extremely critical situation all around the country. According to the researchers who carried out this analysis, this is the greatest sanitary and hospital collapse in the history of Brazil.

The Bulletin shows that, out of the 27 Brazilian Federative Units (UF’s), in 24 States and in the Federal District the occupancy rate of Covid-19 ICU beds for adults in the Unified Health System (SUS) is presently equal or higher than 80%. In 15 UF’s, the rates equal or exceed 90%. In relation to the capitals, 25 out of the 27 have an occupancy rate equal or higher than 80%. In 19 capitals, the rate is over 90%.

The data have been supplied by the health departments of the States, of the Federal District and of the capitals. The new information collected were added to the historical series already presented by the Bulletin. The mapping contains data obtained since July 17th, 2020.

With a view to avoid an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the country, as well as to reduce the bed occupancy rates, researchers advocate the strict adoption of prevention and control actions, such as more rigorous restrictions regarding non-essential activities. They also emphasize the need for improving the physical and social distancing measures, the use of masks and the vaccination pace.

The municipality of Araraquara, in São Paulo, is shown in the Bulletin as one of the current examples of how the restriction of non-essential activities avoids the collapse or prolongation of the severe situation in the health services and systems. After the adoption of restrictive measures in the city, Araraquara managed to reduce the number of new cases deaths, protecting the life and health of the population.
