“Fiotec deserved a building like this. And, by Fiotec, I mean not only the employees working here, but also the entire community, project coordinators, Fiocruz as a whole”, said Mauricio Zuma, Executive Officer, during the institution’s own headquarters opening ceremony, held on November 24th. The President of Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Paulo Gadelha, attended to the event, together with vice-presidents and officers of the Foundation units. The headquarters was included in the expansion of Fiocruz campus in Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro. 

Gadelha emphasized that Fiotec’s cause is the same as Fiocruz’s one, and that this new moment represents two sizes of something the public sector is in need. “One of them is the capacity of making innovative arrangements in the organizational area.  The other is that Fiotec has a very different profile and way of working. Its entire activity area is synergic and essential to the development of strategic projects of Fiocruz”. 

Structure

In addition to shortening the work, which had the duration of about seven months, the type of construction of the headquarters – modular system – is also showing the concern to the environmental issue. The quantity of waste made is very lower than the volume of waste generated by the conventional construction methods.

There is also a rainwater and grey water (waste water from sinks, showers and lavatories) reutilization system.  The entire lighting was made of LED lamps, whose average lifecycle is of approximately 50,000 hours of consumption, according to the Brazilian Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro).

Regarding the environmental compensation due to the removal of 50 trees for giving room to the building, 622 seedlings will be planted in different places of Rio de Janeiro, 36 out of which in the Expansion of Manguinhos Campus.

Innovation

Fiocruz’s President emphasized that Fiotec has the actuation flexibility capability enabling Fiocruz to participate in a series of innovating projects. “Fiotec will be increasingly more required for testing innovative models upon new challenges”. He has also mentioned the innovation of constructing in modular structure. “Fiotec has shown how to, in certain cases, construct a building in seven months, saving time, energy and increasing self-esteem. We need to learn and see where else we can apply this solution”, he concluded.
