On October 17, Fiotec held the lecture called “Women’s Health”, which was given by FioSaúde’s gynecologist, Arthur Bastos, on the occasion of the Pink October campaign. The purpose was to share information and create awareness regarding breast cancer, especially among women, a more susceptible group than men.
The figures presented throughout the lecture reinforce the importance of this campaign. In 2018, 59,000 cases of breast cancer were recorded among women, the highest rate considering all types of cancer. The best prevention method for this disease is early diagnosis, and for that to happen, women should know their own body. A self-exam by touching the breast is the best way to do it. Some of the most common signs are lumps close to the breasts, ripples, swollen nipples and redness. If someone were to encounter one of these signs, or anything else that seems abnormal, the right way to go is to make an appointment with the doctor, so he can perform an evaluation.
The Pink October movement has an international scope, and it was created at the beginning of the 1990s by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the greatest and best financed breast cancer organization in the United States. In Brazil, the National Cancer Institute (Inca) promotes mobilizations for this issue, also creating educational materials and resources to spread information on the early detection and protection factors of breast cancer.
