The first results of the Solidarity clinical trial, which seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of drugs in the treatment of Covid-19, were published in the scientific journal New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
The study is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and, in Brazil, it is conducted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The data had previously been released in a preprint format, but are now in the paper Repurposed Antiviral Drugs for COVID-19 - Interim WHO Solidarity Trial Results, with peer review.
The clinical trial showed that the treatment regimens evaluated - using remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir, and interferon - had little or no effect in patients hospitalized with Covid-19, either in general mortality, onset of ventilation, or length of hospital stay.
Implemented in 18 hospitals in 12 Brazilian states, the Solidarity study has resources from Unidos contra a Covid, a fund created by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) to receive donations that have their amounts destined to actions against the coronavirus throughout the country. The financial management of resources donated by institutions and individuals in Brazil and worldwide is carried out by Fiotec.
